    Whitmer announces Indigent Defense Commission appointments

    Three attorneys have been appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to serve on the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission.

    Loren Khogali, Joshua Blanchard and Michael E. Carter were appointed the to Michigan Indigent Defense Commission for terms that expire April 1, 2028.

    Khogali, the executive director of ACLU Michigan, was appointed to represent individuals submitted by the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan. Previously she was with the Federal Public Defender Office in Detroit, now known as the Federal Community Defender Office.She earned her law degree from Northeastern University School of Law.Khogali succeeds William Swor, whose term has expired.

    Blanchard, an attorney at Miel and Carr, has been reappointed to represent individuals nominated by the Criminal Defense Attorney Association of Michigan. He previously served as director of the Criminal Defense Attorney Association of Michigan and is an ex-officio member of the Criminal Law Section Council. Blanchard earned his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

    Carter is the chief defender and executive director of the Federal Community Defender Office of the Eastern District of Michigan and has practiced indigent criminal defense for more than 15 years. He was appointed to represent those nominated by the Criminal Defense Attorney Association of Michigan. He sits on several boards including the ACLU of Michigan, CDAM, and serves on the faculty of the National Criminal Defense College. Carter, who earned his law degree from Wayne State University Law School, succeeds John Shea whose term has expired.
