New: First lady Jill Biden to visit Michigan next week

First lady Jill Biden is slated to return to Michigan next week for a series of four events in Middleville and Traverse City.

Biden will begin the day Wednesday with an event in Middleville highlighting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s summer nutrition programs for children.

Then, the first lady will visit children of wounded, ill or injured service members or veterans at a Hidden Helpers summer camp in Middleville as part of her Joining Forces initiative.

Following a short flight to Traverse City, Biden will participate in what is described as a “community event.”

The first lady is set to arrive in Grand Rapids Tuesday evening but has no public events scheduled in Michigan on that day. She will spend the night in Michigan following a trip to Pennsylvania for a Congressional Hispanic Caucus on the Road event that afternoon.

Biden previously visited Grand Rapids in April to headline the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation’s annual First Ladies Luncheon as part of the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research.

In May, Biden barnstormed the state with second gentleman Doug Emhoff for a mix of official events and campaign stops for their spouses, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, respectively.

During the three-day swing that made its way across the Upper Peninsula and down to Southeast Michigan, they made stops in Gwinn, Marquette, Kincheloe, Sault Ste. Marie, Freeland, Midland and Detroit.

The first lady’s visit comes less than a week after the first presidential debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump, the first half-hour of which was described by the Associated Press as “a raspy Biden delivers rambling answers while Trump counters with energy and falsehoods.”
