Thousands of DTE customers without power Tuesday following night of heavy storms in Metro Detroit

(WWJ) -- Thousands of people across the state of Michigan woke up in the dark Tuesday following strong, early-morning storms.

Currently, DTE is reporting just over 17,000 homes and business are without power in Metro Detroit, mainly due to wind damage.

Some of the largest outage areas are near South Lyon, Whitmore Lake, Clinton Township and in Harrison Township south of Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

WWJ's Charlie Langton also reported from 15 Mile and Mound roads earlier this morning, where a downed tree had left all but one lane blocked on southbound Mound.

The heavy rainfall also left several roadways and neighborhoods flooded this morning.

That includes the intersections of Woodward and Long Lake, and Lahser and Long Lake in Oakland County.

Further south, WWJ's Mike Campbell reported there's ponding on the road in the area of I-275 and 8 Mile Road in Farmington Hills.

Police are reminding drivers that it is dangerous to drive through flooded streets, advising that it is best to avoid those areas.

And it's not exactly the best day to be without electricity.

Today will be hot and humid, with a high of 87 degrees, a mix of clouds and sun with a stray thunderstorm possible.

Wednesday's AccuWeather forecast calls for a slightly cooler high of 79 degrees, with times of clouds and sun with chance for a shower in the afternoon.
