Vice President Kamala Harris revealed she prayed for former President Donald Trump following his assassination attempt, adding that she has met with former first lady Melania Trump since then.

Harris made her comments during a campaign stop in Michigan on Wednesday, during which she condemned political violence. The vice president also mourned the death of Corey Comperatore , who was killed at the rally shooting while protecting his family.

“My husband, Doug, and I are thankful he was not seriously injured,” Harris said. “That day, as soon as we saw what was happening, we said a prayer for his well-being, and our thoughts immediately turned to Melania, who we have met, and their family. The bottom line is no one should have to fear for the safety of a loved one because they serve in public office.”

Harris then referenced how President Joe Biden called for unity and contended that there needs to be unity in condemning political violence. She added that people need to engage in “a robust debate” of the issues facing voters this November.

At the end of her speech, Harris contended that one of the issues at stake in this election is abortion , adding that this is why she was visiting Michigan.

Harris’s visit to Michigan comes shortly after Donald Trump selected Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate in the 2024 election, with Harris sending Vance a congratulatory message. Harris also stated she hopes the two will get to meet at a debate soon .

The vice president has been seen as a viable replacement for Biden should he choose to drop out of the 2020 race. Jen Psaki, the former Biden White House press secretary, called Harris the “clear alternative” should a replacement for Biden ever be necessary.
