Five secretaries of state are urging billionaire X owner Elon Musk to fix his AI chatbot, Grok, after it disseminated false information about Vice President Kamala Harris’s eligibility for the 2024 presidential ballot.

Grok, the AI assistant featured on social platform X, falsely claimed that Harris had missed the ballot deadline in nine states, a baseless assertion that was quickly shared by millions.

In a letter spearheaded by Minnesota’s Secretary of State Steve Simon, officials from the states mentioned by Grok, including Michigan, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Washington, demanded Musk “immediately implement changes to Grok.”

Simon told the Washington Post: “This latest episode is unfortunate, but it’s also an opportunity to deliver a collective warning about the need for action on behalf of America’s voters. We are all united by the goal of ensuring that voters get accurate information — and that they seek out trusted sources for such information.”

The misinformation spread by Grok began circulating shortly after President Joe Biden suspended his campaign, fueling public speculation about Harris’ candidacy. Despite repeated warnings, Grok continued to propagate the false claims for over a week before corrections were made.

Musk launched Grok as an “anti-woke” alternative to AI tools like ChatGPT, but critics argue the chatbot’s unfiltered nature has allowed dangerous inaccuracies to flourish. The secretaries of state now demand that Grok be updated to direct users to trusted sources like CanIVote.org to prevent further misinformation.
