UPDATE 6:00 P.M.: The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has announced that a four-year-old was the victim of an accidental shooting after gaining access to the parent’s handgun.

At 12:19 p.m. deputies received a 911 call from the area of 2400 Clover Ave. in Middleburg.

When deputies and paramedics arrived they found a four-year-old child suffering from a gunshot wound.

The child was immediately transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was treated.

CCSO said a preliminary investigation revealed the child found the parent’s handgun and accidentally discharged the firearm. Nobody else was injured.

The investigation is still taking place and the Florida Department of Children and Families and the State Attorney’s Office are working together.

Original Story: The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported shooting in Middleburg.

A spokesperson with the sheriff’s office said this was a shooting between family members, and one person was transported to the hospital.

It happened on Clover Avenue. Our crews noticed crime scene tape being put up around the property around two o’clock in the afternoon.

Investigators took an assault-style rifle and a hunting rifle out of the home and took it to a crime scene van.

The Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said no one has been detained at this time.

We asked for additional information on what led to the shooting, as well as information about the victim. Deputies told Action News Jax there would be a media release, but could not provide a timeline.

This remains an ongoing investigation. Updates will be provided as new details emerge.
