The Middlesboro Ladies Golf Association (MLGA) held their third annual Christmas in July Golf Scramble on Friday, raising $15,000 to help families in need have a brighter Christmas this year.

Celia Shoffner is the MGLA president with Kristin Byers, Melissa Turner, Ashley Cambron and Stephanie McCune serving on the board.

“We are overwhelmed by the support and love shown by everyone involved in this year’s scramble. Each contribution, big or small, has helped us reach our goal and bring joy to children in need. Thank you for your support and for being a part of the MLGA family,” the board shared. “We also want to thank PGA Professional, Jerry Shoffner, for facilitating and overseeing the tournament.”

The MLGA is a non-profit organization with the mission to provide charitable, educational, and social opportunities to women in the community. Over the past three years, the association has consistently increased its fundraising efforts, raising $13,500 in 2022, $14,000 in 2023, and now $15,000 in 2024.

The Middlesborough Country Club course was packed with over 100 people on Friday, with 14 teams, many volunteers and community members. The event was made possible by the following corporate sponsors: Middlesboro Coca-Cola Bottling Works, KFC, Hearthside Bank, Middlesboro Independent Schools, Hearthside Bank, and Redmond Auto Group.

“I also want to thank the Middlesboro Police Department, Nick Capps and Floyd Patterson for coming up as ‘Santa,’” Shoffner added.

Taking first place, after a two-hole playoff, was the Pinnacle Painting team of Wil Sanders, David Kelly, Palmer Yoakum, and Brandon Branham. Second place went to the Middlesboro Insurance Agency team of Tom Howard, Kim Cox, Ronnie Cox, and Nick Cox.

Team awards were also given to the MPD Cops 4 Kids team of Harvey Johnson, Jake Perry, Major Edwards and Chief Petie Gilbert for placing seventh and to the Commercial Bank team of Avery Hatmaker, Chris Epperson, Reba Gilbert and Matthew Huddleston for earning the Rudolph Award.

Proximity awards were sponsored by Edward Jones Financial Advisor David Whitlock and the winners were presented trophies designed and 3D printed by Matthew Warren with the IDEAS center—Innovation, Design, & Entrepreneurship at Southeast Community and Technical College. Those included:

    – Longest Putt on #1: Nick Cox
