SKCTC celebrates retirement of 5 esteemed employees

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) is honored to celebrate the retirement of five employees—Jamie Vaught, Sandra Brown, Anita Barnhill, Rebecca Miller and Amy Simpson—whose combined 141 years of service have greatly contributed to the success and growth of the college.

After three decades at SKCTC, Professor Jamie Vaught retired this summer. A professor, sportswriter and photographer, Vaught has been a fixture in both education and sports journalism. He joined SKCTC in 1991, teaching business and accounting while writing six books about University of Kentucky basketball. Vaught plans to focus on writing and spending time with his family.

Sandra Brown, apprenticeship coordinator for Workforce Solutions, is retiring after 17 years at SKCTC. She joined in 2007, serving in various roles, including assistant coordinator for Southeast Scholars and Digital Careers NOW Liaison. Brown reflected on her time at SKCTC, expressing gratitude for the opportunities to serve and make a positive impact on the lives of students and colleagues.

Registrar Anita Barnhill retires after nearly 40 years at SKCTC. She started as a receptionist in 1986 and worked in admissions, financial aid and the business office before becoming registrar. Barnhill looks forward to rest and relaxation, travel and spending time with family. Dr. Rebecca Johnson, vice president of student services, praised her unwavering commitment and lasting impact on SKCTC.

Rebecca Miller, professor of business and computer information technology, has been a cornerstone at SKCTC’s Middlesboro Campus since 1995. Miller’s office, full of memorabilia from students, reflects her impact over the years. Colleagues like Ismail Eldahan and Dr. Don Webb have praised her kindness, professionalism and dedication. Miller looks forward to spending time with family and enjoying travel in the spring and fall.

Dr. Amy Simpson retires after 27 years at SKCTC, having served as an adjunct English instructor, English professor and director of public relations and communications. She also coordinated the academic support center and directed the Middlesborough Little Theatre. Her work, recognized by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, has been featured in notable publications. Dr. Simpson is looking forward to living closer to her family but will miss the mountains and the people of SKCTC.

“These five individuals have exemplified dedication, leadership and commitment throughout their many years at SKCTC,” said interim president Dr. Patsy Jackson. “Their contributions have been instrumental in shaping the experiences of our students and colleagues. We are deeply grateful for their service and wish them all the best in their well-deserved retirements. Their legacies will continue to inspire us all.”
