According to the Middletown Recreation Department:

As part of these renovations, there will be some tree removal in the surrounding area. Tree roots can grow underneath the courts, causing cracks, uneven surfaces, and potential safety hazards.

Leaves, twigs, and other debris can accumulate on the courts which makes maintenance difficult and can create slippery conditions. Overhanging trees can block sunlight, preventing the courts from drying quickly after rain and can lead to prolonged wet and potentially unsafe playing conditions.

"We understand the importance of these trees to our community and the environment, and we have carefully planned this work to minimize impact. By addressing these issues through strategic tree removal, the Township aims to maintain high-quality, safe, and enjoyable tennis and pickleball courts for everyone."
