MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Mystic Aquarium is working to remove a dead dolphin that was found at Third Beach in Middletown, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM).

Once the common dolphin is recovered, the DEM said a necropsy will be performed at the aquarium to determine the cause of its death.

Mystic is among a network of organizations that respond to stranded or beached whales, dolphins and porpoises in Rhode Island and Connecticut through the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Last week, a minke whale died after it became stranded at Briggs Beach in Little Compton.
