This time of the year in Texas it’s perfectly normal to have your AC on in the afternoon and the heat on at night through at least mid-November, depending on which part of the state you live in.

Overall, Texas winters are more mild than wild, and this year, Old Man Winter is expected to take a walk on the mild side, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.

One of America’s oldest weather forecasters, The Old Farmer’s Almanac states that its readers find its predictions to be accurate about 80% of the time.

Here’s what you need to know about winter this year, and what Texans can expect:

    When does winter start?

The first day of winter is Saturday, December 21, 2024.

For central and east Texas in cities like San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Dallas, it will be warmer than usual, with the coldest temperatures hitting in late January and February. These areas should also see less rain than normal.

Winter in South Texas will likely see above-average temperatures. The Almanac says there’s a 50-60% chance of that happening.

In western Texas (including El Paso and Midland-Odessa), it’s predicted to be colder than usual. The chilliest days should be in mid-November, mid-to-late December, and early February. These areas will get more rain than usual.

Amarillo, Lubbock and other cities and towns in the Panhandle will see colder than normal weather with the coldest periods in early and mid-January and early to late February. Precipitation will be near normal, so snowfall amounts will be too.

When will Texas see its first freeze?

Here are the dates the Farmers' Almanac predicts Texas cities will have their first freezes:

    • Abilene: Nov. 5
    • Amarillo: Oct. 24
    • Austin: Nov. 10
    • Brownsville: Dec. 29
    • Corpus Christi: Dec. 12
    • Dallas: Nov. 20
    • El Paso: Nov. 14
    • Fort Worth: Nov. 14
    • Houston: Dec. 8
    • Killeen: Nov. 8
    • Laredo: Dec. 15
    • Lubbock: Nov. 5
    • Odessa: Nov. 8
    • San Antonio: Nov. 18
