Virtually every city in the San Diego County area has its own army of breweries, gastropubs, and bars -- and Escondido is no different. It's just part of being the craft beer capital of the U.S.

Escondido has a slew of different places to grab a drink, from wineries to meaderies. But if you're looking for the best places to have an icy cold craft beer in a fun environment, here are my picks in the city.

    5. Burgeon at The Oasis

Address: 649 Rock Springs Rd Suite B, Escondido, CA 92025

    Website: https://burgeonbeer.com/

A tiny brewery tucked away in Western Escondido, Burgeon used to be named Escondido Brewing Company and was the smallest brewery in the county before being acquired by Burgeon Beer. Despite the dimunitive size of the brewery, the craft beers here are still top-notch.

It's still a humble spot located next to a feed and pet supply store, but Burgeon brewing is a great place to grab a beer with some friends. The beers are solid here, and there's plenty of outdoor seating. You'll also often find food trucks serving up the perfect accompaniments to a cold one.

    4. Plan 9 Alehouse

Address: 155 E Grand Ave, Escondido, CA 92025

    Website: http://www.plan9alehouse.com/

A quintessential San Diego gastropub, Plan 9 Alehouse combines an extensive list of local and national craft brews with artisanal fare. Don't just expect average bar eats here -- the food is actually quite exceptional.

The beer and food menus change often, so it's hard to recommend any standing favorites. However, there's always something for every palate. In addition to showcasing beers from other breweries, Plan 9 also brews a list of specialties with unique flavor profiles.

    3. Jacked Up Brewery

Address: 800 W Grand Ave, Escondido, CA 92025

    Website: https://jackedupbrewery.com/

If you'd like some entertainment with your freshly poured beer, Jacked Up Brewery is an excellent choice in Escondido. It's a fully-fledged brewery with a food menu that also hosts live music and comedy events.

On tap, you'll find a familiar menu of award-winning beers -- including specialties to the San Diego region. Better yet, kids and dogs are "more than welcome" to the brewery, which is located just off Grand Avenue in Escondido, California.

    2. Barrel Republic

Address: 136 W Grand Ave, Escondido, CA 92025

    Website: https://barrelrepublic.com/locations/escondido/

Barrel Republic is a unique place that combines craft beer and a self-pour tap system with a sports bar-like atmosphere. Founded in San Diego, there are now several locations throughout San Diego -- including one on Grand Ave. in Escondido.

There's no bar at this establishment. Instead, you'll pour your own craft beers from one of the many taps lining the walls. There's a great variety of various craft brew styles, as well as wine, kombucha, mead, and non-alcoholic options. You'll also find a menu of rock-solid food options that are actually delicious.

    1. Stone Brewing Bistro & Gardens

Address: 1999 Citracado Parkwy, Escondido, CA 92029

    Website: https://www.stonebrewing.com/visit

Founded in the 1990s, Stone Brewing is one of the largest independent craft breweries in the country. Escondido is also its home town, and the location of both the company headquarters and primary brewery. But this location isn't just a corporate office -- it's also home to a beautiful and modern restaurant environment.

In addition to an extensive menu of Southern California craft beers, there are also plenty of delicious food options that thoroughly buck your expectations of bar fare. You'll also find a Stone Brewing gift shop, an outdoor firepit, and guided brewery tours. The Stone Brewing Bistro & Garden is definitely a must-visit for both locals and visitors to the San Diego region.
