PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced several planned closures and lane restrictions on Phoenix-area freeways for the upcoming weekend, August 4-7, due to several road improvement projects. The roadways affected include Interstate 17 (I-17), US Highway 60 (US 60), Loop 202, State Route 143 (SR 143), and Loop 303. Drivers in these areas should allow for extra travel time and consider detour routes.

One of the significant closures will be on northbound I-17 between Northern Avenue and Greenway Road. The closure, which will last from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, is part of a pavement improvement project. In addition, the northbound I-17 on-ramps at Bethany Home Road and Glendale Avenue will also be closed. As a result, drivers are likely to face heavy traffic and are advised to use alternate routes, such as the northbound State Route 51 or westbound Loop 101.

Likewise, westbound US 60 will be closed between Loop 101 and I-10 in Tempe for an ongoing pavement improvement project. Closures extend to both Loop 101 ramps to westbound US 60 and westbound US 60 on-ramps at Alma School and Dobson roads. Suggested detours include the westbound Loop 202, or local routes such as Baseline Road and Southern Avenue.

Other closures include parts of northbound Loop 202, southbound SR 143, and both directions of Loop 303, with respective detour routes suggested by ADOT. In addition, eastbound Loop 101 will be narrowed down to two lanes overnight between Seventh and 16th streets for a wall construction project.

These improvement projects form part of ADOT’s initiatives under the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region, with most projects partially funded by Proposition 400. This dedicated sales tax was approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004 to facilitate the construction of new freeways, additional lanes, and other vital improvements.

To stay updated on real-time highway conditions, residents and commuters can visit ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov or call 511. Information is also available on ADOT's Twitter feed, @ArizonaDOT. All drivers are urged to exercise patience, allow for extra travel time, and be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through work zones.
