Growing up in Milford, athletics are woven into the fabric of the community. Ethan “Wayne” Hurd, a 1990 graduate, embodies this tradition. A three-year letterman in football, Hurd excelled both on and off the field. His dedication and versatility, playing guard on offense and both tackle and linebacker on defense, earned him recognition. Today, Hurd’s commitment is being honored with his induction into the Milford 12th Man Gridiron Club Hall of Fame.

Reflecting on this honor, Hurd shared his feelings: “Being named to the Hall of Fame is amazing. To be considered, let alone selected, is incredible. When you think about all the players already in there, it’s an honor to be part of that group. My time at Milford was special; I forged friendships that have lasted a lifetime.”

During his high school career, Hurd’s talent was undeniable. He earned 2nd team All-Conference honors as a junior, 1st team as a senior, and 3rd team All-State recognition. Yet, for Hurd, the camaraderie with his teammates was the most rewarding aspect. “We were all very close, spending so much time together both on and off the field. It really was a special time for all of us. The community of Milford helped shape who I am today.”

Hurd was also selected for the Blue/Gold All-Star game, an experience he cherishes. He credits his friend Sam Hollis for having a profound impact on his life. “At first, I didn’t think much about it, but over time, it opened my heart and mind to how people should be treated. I learned more from him than he did from me. Seeing him every once in a while is still great. He’s a wonderful person, and it was an honor to know him.”

In addition to his football prowess, Hurd was a two-time All-State baseball player. He continued his baseball career in college, initially walking on at Western Maryland College before transferring to Wesley, where he completed his athletic journey. Academically driven, Hurd graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, followed by a Master’s Degree in Applied Chemistry.

Hurd’s involvement with football didn’t end with his playing days. He coached the offensive line and linebackers at Milford in 1993 and 1994 and also coached youth football for Milford Pop Warner and Flag football. His dedication extended to working the chains when needed and serving as an official and member of the Delmarva Football Official’s Association.

Hurd attributes much of his success to his father, Ethan Sr. “There was no halfway; you were expected to dedicate yourself to whatever you were doing. That drive has guided me throughout my life, and it’s a mentality I’ve tried to instill in my children, Ethan III and Faith.” His son, Ethan III, followed in his footsteps, playing for the Buccaneers in 2013 and 2016.

Currently residing in Milford with his wife Amy, Hurd has also achieved professional success. He works with Clarkston Consulting, specializing in software development and quality control for SAP applications.

Ethan “Wayne” Hurd’s induction into the Milford 12th Man Gridiron Club Hall of Fame is a testament to his dedication, both on the field and in his community. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of Milford athletes.
