A New Jersey swimmer was found dead Saturday evening after drowning near the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Jeysson Ariel Osorio-Reyes, 24, was found at 7 p.m. near Milford Beach in Pike County, according to National Park Service officials. He was last seen at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses saw Osorio-Reyes swimming mid-channel in the river before he disappeared under the water. Dive teams from the park service and fire services tried to find him. There are no lifeguards at Milford Beach.

A spokesperson from the Pike County coroner’s office said it was an accidental drowning. Osorio-Reyes was 75 yards away from the Pennsylvania shoreline “swimming far offshore,” according to National Park Services spokesperson Kathleen Sandt.

“It’s a challenging environment to swim in,” Sandt continued. “The Delaware River is fun, but if you want to have fun, put on a life jacket.”
