MILLBURN, NJ – Millburn's Assembly Member Rosy Bagolie attended the recent township committee to speak about the crime prevention bills that she’s been working on in the New Jersey Assembly.
“They were a package of bills presented before the assembly for home security and safety. The first bill concerns keyless locking mechanisms because burglars are now learning new ways to tap into your Wi-Fi systems and break into your [home/car] digitally," began Bagolie.
She continued to say that keyless locks are connected through Wi-Fi or through a battery. Bagolie explained, “A new bill now restricts those mechanisms and makes sure that they cannot be tampered with.” She reported that five bills have been approved by the assembly.
She also talked about a bill she’s sponsoring that was inspired by a Millburn Neighborhood Watch meeting that she attended with Deputy Mayor Frank Saccomandi. “[We’re trying] to start a ‘Home Security Systems Anti Burglaries Task Force’ [A4528] with the state to see what burglaries are occurring across the state, how individuals are breaking in, and how we are going to provide more support to townships that are being that where these events are continuous and reoccurring.” Bagolie said the purpose of the bill is to determine how to best support police department provide education to residents.
Sampson Bill A4529 requires the Attorney General to conduct a study tracking residential burglaries and issuing guidance for the public. A4530 allows sentencing to be extended to terms for repeated convictions of stolen property and of receipt of stolen property like stealing a package from a house’s front stoop. Bagolie noted, “If there's someone that's repeatedly doing that, it could be simple theft or breaking into a home repeatedly.”
She also spoke of the bill that limits negotiating plea agreements for the crime of burglary when a firearm is involved. "These five bills were part of the package of 130 bills that we passed the last day we were in session on June 28. They have to get through the Senate now and then to the governor's office for signature,” The final bill that Bagolie talked about was S3028, which increases penalties for juveniles and adults convicted of motor vehicle theft and related crimes. She mentioned that she’s been advocating for that bill and residents can write to their other state officials to help support it.
Bagolie said that she lives in Livingston, and her house is the last Livingston house on the border of Millburn and Short Hills. “Whatever affects you, affects me. It's part of my responsibility and duty to make sure that we pass legislation that supports whatever is happening in our legislative district and community,” she concluded.
Bagolie encouraged residents to contact her if they want to discuss anything and/or meet with her. Click HERE to email her or call (973) 535-5017.
