Rig overturns on Route 20 near Pike interchange in Millbury; traffic detoured

MILLBURY — A tanker truck overturned on Route 20 overnight, prompting a detour that continued into Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred about 2 a.m. at the Massachusetts Turnpike interchange, near the Upper Blackstone Water Treatment Plant.

The rig was hauling diesel fuel, some of which spilled. Firefighters are involved in a hazardous materials cleanup that will continue for several hours.

The road is closed between Granite and Greenwood streets. There is no access to Route 20 from the turnpike. Motorists are urged to use Exit 94 (Route 146).

Motorists are urged to avoid the area.

Officials said the cleanup could last into Tuesday evening.
