The majority of residents in this coverage gap are people of color, an analysis found. Nearly 1 of every 5 uninsured working-age adults across the 10 states that have not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act are, according to a new analysis, stuck in a health care limbo known as a “coverage gap.” That means they earn too much money to receive Medicaid but not enough to qualify for financial help to purchase their own plan on the marketplace.

The Alabama State Department of Education tapped AcaSTEMics to conduct teacher professional development (PD) to over 175 school systems at the State’s annual conference. AcaSTEMics is the brainchild of Dillon native Jerome D. McQueen, PE focused on exposing students to career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The PD centered around each participant assembling their own “Magic Lamp” STEM kit and how to leverage hands-on fun into motivating students in the classroom.
Alabama Lawmaker Facing Federal Prison Time After Allegedly Breaking Plea Agreement
John Rogers, one the longest serving lawmakers in the Alabama House, is facing federal prison. According to court records, Rogers has breached his long-standing plea agreement for misusing Jefferson County tax dollars during his last term. Rogers’ term ended after he pleaded guilty to participating in a federal kickback scheme. The case involved the Jefferson County Community Action Fund, which used increased taxes in 2017 to support local students by funding new school construction. Rogers, along with fellow state lawmakers Fred Plump and Varrie Johnson Kindall, exploited the action fund for personal gain. The state senators directed some of the grant money...

Mountain Lakes Triathlon Results: Cardoso, Sass Zip to Wins
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Paulo Cardoso and Kirsten Sass captured top honors Saturday morning in the 37th Mountain Lakes Triathlon. The field of almost 150 athletes and 118 finishers from eight states had a swim in Lake Guntersville, then a loop ride along the lake before finishing with a lakeside run. The event offered Olympic and Sprint divisions. Olympic athletes had a 1,200-yard swim, 34.2-mile bike ride and 6-mile run. The Sprint included a 600-yard swim, 16.2-mile ride and 3-mile run.
