Historical Musings: Morgan House Hotel doctor visits
The promise of miracle cures are as age-old as are promises, or miracles, themselves. Turn on the television any given time of day, and the viewer is bombarded with cures for anything from restless legs to hearing loss to tinnitus. Those promises are not unlike the miracle claims of days past when an enthusiastic, hopeful and less-informed audience might be taken in. A good example of the traveling snake oil salesman can be found in a 1912 article in the Milton Telephone newspaper, offering a...
Historical Musings: Milton Notable News of the Day

These are just a few headlines from Milton’s Weekly Telephone newspaper of the 1880s. Vintage newspaper headlines and stories offer a glimpse of the past in more ways than one. News items studied from papers of yore illustrate important issues of the day — some long settled, others ongoing. News of the day can also shed light on...
Janesville School District to explore having lacrosse team
JANESVILLE — Parents, athletes and coaches affiliated with the Janesville Lacrosse Club pleaded to the Janesville School Board Tuesday to apply to the WIAA to establish a team in the district. As a result of the requests, the district administration will explore the possibility of adding lacrosse as a varsity sport. The WIAA sanctioned lacrosse as a sport in December. Play starts in 2023-24. It is a spring sport. The WIAA deadline to add lacrosse was June 1, so now the earliest Janesville could field...
Triumph through tragedy: UW-Whitewater men's basketball team, head coach Pat Miller rally to Final Four after Derek Gray's death
WHITEWATER — Pat Miller’s normal plan to develop his UW-Whitewater men’s basketball teams underwent a dramatic change this past season. It was a year that the Janesville native had to counsel and guide a group of young men — there was only one senior on the roster — through the tragic death of a peer, teammate Derek Gray. That’s something that’s not in the Coaching 102 syllabus. Held together and...

Schutt settles in as new member of Wisconsin Assembly
CLINTON — Ellen Schutt is one of the newest members of the Wisconsin State Assembly, but she is not the only newbie who was elected to the state body in November. Schutt, a Republican from Clinton, is one of 24 newly elected Assembly members — 16 new Republicans and eight new Democrats — making up one quarter of the Assembly. “It’s been fun getting to know the new class,” Schutt...
Southern Wisconsin growers will participate in state-funded search for ideal fertilizer rates
WATERTOWN — Farmers have worked for years to figure out the best rate at which to apply fertilizer to crops, and a round of grants from the state agriculture department will help farmers — including local growers — figure out the puzzle. For growers of corn and soybean, and life on the planet, nitrogen is important. Nitrogen is the primary element sought when manure or ammonia is applied to crops...
Jefferson close to locking in perhaps biggest development deal in community history
JEFFERSON — What city officials and a Brookfield-based developer are calling a “$100 million-plus legacy development” seems on the verge of realization on Jefferson’s north side. “This is probably the biggest development deal in this community’s history,” said Jefferson City Administrator Tim Freitag. The former Jefferson County Highway Department site at the southwest corner of Business Highway 26 and Puerner Street — now mostly a weed-infested, 13-acre concrete slab —...
Once Milton's largest employer, Burdick Corporation moved to Deerfield 25 years ago
Twenty-five years ago this month, the city of Milton lost an anchor of its industrial base when the Burdick Corporation pulled up stakes and moved to a new facility in Deerfield. The medical equipment manufacturer had been a fixture in the heart of the city, operating from a 100,000-square foot facility along Madison Avenue. The building Burdick Corporation vacated is currently the home for the Blackhawk Technical College Milton campus. ...
