Bicyclists anticipate another season of comfortable riding in Jefferson County
JEFFERSON — Jefferson County is a relatively friendly, safe place for bicyclists to peddle ever-expanding local trails, streets, town roads and many county highways. Watertown’s Dale Oestreich, 66, has been a serious bicyclist for 50 years. As a university student in Madison in the 1970s he commuted more than 25 miles per day to school and work. For another 30 years, he rode his bike to his place of employment, year round, in Watertown. ...

Benson, Marshick remain Janesville City Council president, vice president
JANESVILLE — With the exception of the exit of Douglas Marklein after a decade on the Janesville City Council, the basic fiber of the Janesville council remains unchanged. After a quick set of votes at a brief special meeting Tuesday morning, the council voted 5-2 to re-appoint Councilman Paul Benson to a one-year term as president. Separately, the council voted 4-3 to re-seat Marshick, who was re-elected to the council April 6, as vice president. ...
YWCA Stand Against Racism events go on after county board debate
Days after a Rock County Board supervisor attempted to remove from a meeting agenda a proclamation supporting an upcoming Stand Against Racism Week, organizers say two related local events will go on. The YWCA said it would hold its annual Stand Against Racism event on April 20 in Janesville and on April 27 in Beloit. The county board last Thursday voted to declare the week in-between those two dates as...
High water pauses Indianford Dam construction
EDGERTON — Construction on the Indianford Dam water control project has again paused due to high-water levels. General contractor IEI pulled off the project in recent days, due to conditions that prevented drying of the east chamber, according to Rock Koshkonong Lake District Chairman Alan Sweeney. “Work left to complete the improvements to the east chamber include concrete sawing and the installation of a new spillway on the interior of...
College baseball: Heavy hitters should allow UW-Whitewater to excel again in 2023
WHITEWATER — If the UW-Whitewater baseball team forgot what Wisconsin weather was like after spending last week in Pensacola, Florida, one glance at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium on Saturday morning was a stark reminder. “We probably got 8 to 10 inches,” Warhawks coach John Vodenlich said of the overnight snowstorm that hit the area. The snowfall forced the postponement of this past weekend’s opening pair of Wisconsin...
WIAC softball: UW-Whitewater hopes to return to conference's upper echelon
WHITEWATER—Pitching is the main weapon in softball. Knowing that, UW-Whitewater softball coach Brenda Volk is confident as her team prepares to begin the Wisconsin portion of its 2023 schedule after going 10-2 last week during spring break in Clermont, Florida. “We have seven pitchers, and they all have contributed greatly,” Volk said. “They will keep us in every game and give us a chance to win.” ...

Girls basketball: Red Hawks fall short in comeback effort against Stoughton
MILTON—In a difficult matchup filled with whistles and missed calls, Milton lost its first girls basketball conference game of the season to Stoughton on Saturday. While both teams felt the impact of the referees calls, the Red Hawks got the worst of it in their 63-59 loss. Costly turnovers and travel calls against Milton led to easy Stoughton baskets in the first half. In the first, more than 10 travel calls were handed out to both teams. Milton took the majority of the hit. ...

Since his freshman year, Sinclair has not only been dominating in the conference but in the state. ...
'I've been very fortunate': More time with family in Kevin Bullis' future after retirement from UW-Whitewater football
Two things are a common cause of college head coaches’ retirements: losses or the enormous amount of hours they have to work to be successful. For UW-Whitewater football coach Kevin Bullis, it was eight seasons running one of the most successful—if not the most successful—NCAA Division III football programs that ultimately led to him giving up the job. Bullis’ retirement was announced publicly Nov. 22. While the college football world...
Vote on Woodman's Sports and Convention Center not expected until after Janesville City Council election in April
The Janesville City Council likely will vote this spring on whether to roll ahead with the Woodman’s Sports and Convention Center—but not until a new council is seated after an election in April. Under a new timeline galvanized Nov. 15, the center’s design team wouldn’t wrap up design and development of the two-sheet, 130,000-square-foot arena and move the project into contract bidding before May 2023. That means the current council,...

The Warhawks now get a bye week to prepare for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Oct. 1 at UW-La Crosse. The Warhawks, who were ranked No. 4 this...
