I-84 closed from Pendleton to Baker City, both directions between Baker City and Ontario
EAST OREGON (CBS2) — I-84 eastbound is closed from Pendleton (Exit 216) to Baker City and closed in both directions between Baker City (Exit 302) and Ontario (Exit 374). The Durkee Fire remains active and forced I-84 to close late Tuesday night. U.S. 30 between Baker City and Haines, OR 204 (Tollgate Hwy.), OR 203 (Medical Springs Hwy.) and OR 245 are also closed to all but local traffic, as these are not viable detours for freeway traffic.

Portions of I-84 in eastern Oregon close overnight for firefighting
Transportation officials are closing portions of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon to help firefighters attack the Durkee fire. Starting Monday at 7 p.m., eastbound lanes between Pendleton and Baker City were closed. All lanes of I-84 from Baker City to Ontario were closed. They were expected to reopen at 5 a.m.
Milton-Freewater vineyard takes home 8 medals in wine competition
MILTON-FREEWATER — Los Rocosos Vineyards rocked the Rock District of Milton-Freewater after winning eight medals at the annual Pacific Northwest Wine Competition. The three-day competition, June 24-26, in its ninth year at Walla Walla Community College, received 717 wine entries — a record. Out of all the wine competitors, Los Rocosos Vineyards, which grows its grapes on 80 feet of basalt cobble, won eight medals for its wines.
Pendleton graduate splashes into Olympics
PENDLETON — Rob Collins, a 1999 Pendleton High School graduate, will be in Paris for the Summer Olympic Games. Collins is an assistant coach for the University of Tennessee swimming and diving program. He said a pair of Peru Swimming Federation athletes — Joaquin Vargas, who swims for UT, and McKenna DeBever, a professional swimmer who trains at the Tennessee facilities — asked him to help them train for the Summer Games. This is his first time attending the Olympics in any capacity and he has high hopes for the two swimmers.

Mongata Estate Winery: A Hidden Gem Born from a Mid-Life Career Change
Scott and Vicki Nokleby decided to make a mid-life career change and move to the Walla Walla Valley in 2020. Opening a winery was not part of the plan. After an exhaustive search they found the perfect spot and purchased a farm located in the Blue Mountain foothills near Milton-Freewater, Oregon. The property included a 17-acre vineyard planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Viognier grapes. It was also one of the few vineyards in the Walla Walla appellation growing Chardonnay. “We thought we could be grape farmers and sell our grapes and maybe make wine down the road,” Scott Nokleby says.
Olympics: Kenneth Rooks Profile
Kenneth Rooks is part of the Track and Field team and is from College Place. Rooks will compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Rooks won the 2017 1A State Championship in Cross Country, won the 1600 meters, and finished second in the 800 meters competing for College Place. After high school, Rooks went to BYU where he had a successful career. He won the 2023 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championship in the 3000-meter steeplechase by over six seconds. He was also a four-time All-American, three times outdoors and one indoor, and was on the first team three times. Rooks won gold in the 2023 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the 3000-meter steeplechase, where he fell in the race and came back to take the gold. He left BYU to pursue his professional career and is represented by Nike.
