UW Credit Union, State Fair partner for cream puff centennial event
A celebration of the 100th anniversary of the famous cream puff at the 2024 Wisconsin State Fair has a title sponsor.<\p> The Cream Puff Lovin' Celebration will be presented by UW Credit Union, which announced a multiyear partnership with Wisconsin State Fair on Tuesday. The event will take place Aug. 10, the second to last day of the Wisconsin State Fair, and include unspecified entertainment and perks for festivalgoers.<\p>
Giving Tree Garage Beer Garden opens in Walker's Point
Giving Tree Garage Beer Garden opened in Walker's Point on Sunday, just in time for the Pride Parade.<\p> This is the latest addition to the craft and beer bar Draft & Vessel family, which includes brick-and-mortar locations in Wauwatosa and Shorewood and a pop-up beer garden in the summer outside the Milwaukee Public Market in the Third Ward. The new beer garden builds on his pop-up, using his collection of vintage trucks to serve beers on tap.<\p>
IndyCar Experience a preview of racing comeback at Milwaukee Mile
That was fast!<\p> The IndyCar Series returns to the Milwaukee Mile in August for the first time since 2015. Improvements totaling $3 million have been on the track in preparation for the much-anticipated Milwaukee Mile 250, slated for Labor Day weekend, and these upgrades were tested out in style Monday with the IndyCar Experience, which is a separate entity from the racing series.<\p>
See who the James Beard Foundation named best chef in the Midwest
A Minneapolis chef topped Milwaukee chefs and business partners Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite to win the Best Chef: Midwest category during the James Beard Awards ceremony held Monday in Chicago.<\p> Jacobs and Van Rite were nominees for the award. At the Monday ceremony, the foundation named Christina Nguyen, of Hai Hai in Minneapolis, the winner in the category.<\p>
Prominent attorney, civic leader José Olivieri passes away
José Olivieri, who was a prominent attorney at one of Milwaukee’s largest law firms and a leader in the city’s civic, business and Hispanic communities, died on Sunday at the age of 66.<\p> Friends of Olivieri told the Milwaukee Business Journal he had been battling cancer. A statement Monday from law firm Michael Best, where he was a senior partner, said he passed away surrounded by his family.<\p>

Shopko Optical, which has expanded in the years since Shopko Stores' 2019 bankruptcy filing, will be sold to Fielmann Group as the German firm grows its foothold in the United States.<\p> Fielmann Group said Monday it entered into a definitive agreement for its United States subsidiary to acquire 100% ownership in Shopko Optical, an optical retailer based in Green Bay. <\p>
Big deadlines loom for Realtors commission lawsuits
The class-action lawsuits that rocked the residential real estate industry over the last year are barreling toward a possible conclusion — and some big changes in the remainder of 2024. <\p> One of the most important deadlines is Aug. 17, 2024, when the NAR has said it would implement a series of changes as part of its own $418 million settlement agreement over buyer commissions. <\p>
Ascension Wisconsin restores access to key patient records
Ascension Wisconsin said Monday patients and clinicians regained access to electronic health records — nearly five weeks after those records went offline due to a cyberattack.<\p> Last week, Ascension said patients and clinical staff in Wisconsin would regain access to electronic health records by June 14, so Monday’s news falls within that schedule. <\p>
Airlines adding flights, seat capacity at Mitchell for RNC
On the heels of recent flight additions at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport by the likes of Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Alaska Airlines, two major carriers will increase capacity at the airport for the Republican National Convention.<\p> The Republican National Convention is scheduled for Milwaukee July 15-18 and is expected to attract 50,000 visitors to Milwaukee with an expected direct and indirect economic impact of around $200 million.<\p>
Pizza Shuttle opens at 3rd St. Market Hall
The recent exit of Paper Plane Pizza Co. from 3rd St. Market Hall provided an opportunity for Milwaukee’s Pizza Shuttle to take over the space with a new concept that will be an extension of its existing east side location.<\p> “Our home and roots will forever be on Farwell (Avenue), and we’re also eager to take on this new opportunity,” said Kirby Clark, who will be bringing the Pizza Shuttle Slice Shop to the food hall, 275 W. Wisconsin Ave., in late June with partner Phil Wilder.<\p>
Gen Z cites housing affordability as its top election issue
In the wake of rapid home-price appreciation during the Covid-19 pandemic, housing is playing a bigger role in how Americans vote — among one demographic in particular.<\p> Ninety-one percent of adult Gen Zers said in a recent Redfin Corp. (Nasdaq: RDFN) survey housing affordability is important when considering whom they will vote for in the presidential election this November. Among a list of nine broad political topics, the subject ranked No. 1 for that generation — ranking even higher than the strength of the overall economy, which was the top priority for millennials, Gen Xers and baby boomers. Housing affordability for Gen Z respondents also outranked issues of education, gun rights and abortion rights.<\p>
New restaurants planned for 84South in Greenfield
Two new restaurants – Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant and Chipotle – could be coming to Greenfield as part of the 84South complex.<\p> The city’s Plan Commission is scheduled to consider the proposals Tuesday.<\p>
Marquette University president Michael Lovell dies
Marquette University president Michael Lovell has died three years after he was diagnosed with sarcoma, the school said Sunday.<\p> The Catholic, Jesuit school in Milwaukee released the news in a statement signed by board chair Todd Adams, provost Kimo Ah Yun and chief operating officer Joel Pogodzinski. Lovell, 57, had been Marquette’s president since 2014, after previously serving as the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was Marquette’s first lay leader, succeeding Rev. Scott Pilarz.<\p>
State tourism officials track the 'Top Chef' effect
The hit Bravo “Top Chef” series titled this week's episode “Goodbye Wisconsin” as the final cheftestants created dishes that reflected their season-long growth, a theme also on the minds of the state’s tourism officials who continue to track the show’s economic impact here.<\p> Wednesday's episode left four chefs remaining, including Milwaukee’s own Dan Jacobs, co-owner of the city’s DanDan and EsterEv restaurants and, now, a finalist for the 2024 James Beard Foundation Awards category for "Best Chef: Midwest” set to be decided June 10. This 12th episode of "Top Chef" is also the last to focus on the Badger State, before the finalists are narrowed down to Season 21's ultimate top chef during a June 19 finale on Bravo. <\p>
Elon Musk firm selects Phoenix Investors site for AI supercomputer
Elon Musk is planning to build what could be the most advanced supercomputer in the United States at the former Electrolux Memphis facility now owned by Milwaukee-based Phoenix Investors, multiple sources have told the Memphis Business Journal. <\p> The supercomputer project was confirmed in a June 5 press conference held by the Greater Memphis Chamber. Sources told the Memphis Business Journal that the Chamber has been working to recruit the Musk operation to Memphis for months.<\p>
BBQ joint's sauce touted by Oprah now at some Meijer stores
A barbecue sauce that has become popular for customers of restaurant Pat’s Rib Place has entered the grocery market with its debut at four Meijer stores in southeast Wisconsin.<\p> The husband-and-wife team of Ty and Alisha Hayes own Pat’s Rib Place at the Milwaukee Public Market, 400 N. Water St., and getting their sauce onto grocery store shelves has been a goal for about four years.<\p>
Wisconsin manufacturer to sell to global firm for $695M
Trachte LLC, a Wisconsin company that builds preassembled, modular steel buildings for primarily the utilities and data center industries, has agreed to sell for $695 million to a global public company that provides electrical connection and protection systems.<\p> Private equity firm Palladium Equity Partners LLC is selling its majority stake in Trachte, which is based in the Dane County village of Oregon, to London-based nVent Electric plc (NYSE: NVT). <\p>
Prominent developers team up on $45M Harbor District project
Rule Enterprises is joining forces with another prominent developer on a five-story apartment building slated to add 140 units at a mix of price points in the city's Harbor District.<\p> Brandon Rule, president of his namesake real estate firm, has brought on his long-standing friend and fellow local builder, Michael Emem of Emem Group LLC, into the nearly $45 million project as a partner and co-developer. <\p>
