Former MU stars Dwyane Wade and Travis Diener raise funds for literacy
For the second year in a row, Marquette University basketball legends Dwyane Wade and Travis Diener assembled to raise money for youth literacy programs in southeastern Wisconsin.<\p> The event included Diener and Wade coaching a camp for youth girls basketball players in Mequon on Saturday. Later that day a tee-off event was held at Pilot Project Brewing.<\p>
Snoop Dogg opens Potawatomi Casino Hotel outdoor stage: Slideshow
Entertainment icon Snoop Dogg graced the stage in Milwaukee Saturday night for the first major concert at the new outdoor concert venue at Potawatomi Casino Hotel.<\p> The stage was first announced by CEO Dominic Oritz when he was the featured speaker at a Power Breakfast event hosted by the Milwaukee Business Journal in February. The venue, which is west of the casino's main property, is between 150,000 to 200,000 square feet with a variety of seating options, ranging from picnic tables to double-decker VIP tents. It has a 4,800-person capacity.<\p>
Green Bay, Lambeau Field in line to be a 2026 FIFA World Cup base camp
Lambeau Field in Green Bay hosted an exhibition soccer match between potent international teams in 2022 in what's known as a "soccer friendly." It might host soccer players from around the world once again.<\p> The Fédération Internationale de Football Association this month announced a list of potential team base locations for the FIFA World Cup in 2026, with Green Bay and Lambeau Field making the cut. Green Bay’s Lodge Kohler was selected as a paired hotel for the event.<\p>

In recent years, the race for the largest manufacturing firm in the Milwaukee area based on the number of local employees has been a two-company competition. A third could upend that dynamic.<\p> The medical imaging device manufacturer GE HealthCare Technologies Inc. and Quad, the commercial printing and marketing company widely known as Quad/Graphics Inc., have traded the No. 1 position on the Milwaukee Business Journal's annual list of the Largest Milwaukee-area Manufacturing Firms.<\p>
Homeowners continue to build equity, impacting future buying decisions
American homeowners continue to build significant equity even as the housing market has slowed and home prices aren't rising as rapidly as they did in recent years.<\p> U.S. homeowners with a mortgage pulled in $28,000 in equity gains on average year over year in the first quarter, the highest amount since late 2022, according to CoreLogic Inc. That average year-over-year increase of 9.6% translates to a collective gain of $1.5 trillion and means net homeowner equity totaled more than $17 trillion at the end of Q1.<\p>
Restaurant opens in West Allis with a mix of Cajun and Mexican cuisine
The Godoy family has been on the Milwaukee restaurant scene for more than 25 years, whether running restaurants at a Milwaukee-area mall or selling tacos from a solar panel bike, all tasks they tackled before joining their skills and business know-how to open Manny’s Bourbon Grill & Pub in West Allis.<\p> The husband-and-wife team of Manuel “Manny” and Maria Godoy purchased the restaurant’s building at 6300 W. Lincoln Ave., and put in a significant amount of renovations to the space before opening in early June, according to Deisy Godoy, one of the couple’s two daughters who said she is also part-owner of the family’s first brick-and-mortar business.<\p>
New-to-market pizza chain secures first Milwaukee-area location
Brothers and franchisees Jasmeet and Ranbir Shergill have secured leases for the first two of six planned locations of Mountain Mike's Pizza, which will be new to Wisconsin when they open restaurants in Greenfield and the Fox Valley area.<\p> Jay Blom and Tom Treder, of the Milwaukee-based Founders 3 Real Estate Services, are representing the Shergill brothers as they work to bring Mountain Mike's Pizza to the Milwaukee and Green Bay areas.<\p>

Boat engine manufacturer to temporarily lay off 300 employees
Recreational-boat engine manufacturer Mercury Marine instituted a summertime layoff of about 300 employees at its headquarters plant in Fond du Lac, citing softening demand in some of its markets.<\p> A company spokesman said Friday that Mercury Marine started informing employees of the layoffs during the third shift Thursday night. The layoffs will run through July. <\p>
Alverno College to cut programs, eliminate faculty and staff
A Milwaukee college will reduce its program offerings and eliminate staff and faculty positions following years of declining enrollment and budget deficits.<\p> Alverno College’s board of trustees declared financial exigency Friday, and with that comes program cuts and a reduction in Alverno's workforce. The private school will eliminate 14 undergraduate programs and six graduate programs. In addition, the college will also cut 25 full-time faculty positions, 12 full-time staff positions and combine and restructure departments. It will also discontinue its track and field athletic program.<\p>
New WestRock plant to bring 177 jobs to Kenosha County
A previously announced manufacturing facility is set to bring nearly 200 jobs to Kenosha County.<\p> The new 190-acre WestRock Co. (NYSE: WRK) industrial facility, near the intersection of County Highway H and 95th Street in Pleasant Prairie, is said to create 177 jobs in the community, according to a press release from Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers. WestRock Co., an Atlanta-based paper and packaging provider, announced plans to build the advanced corrugated converting facility in January.<\p>

'Be the Light' gala raises funds for Sojourner Family Peace Center
Business and community leaders gathered Thursday evening at the Baird Center for the "Be the Light" event to help raise money for the Sojourner Family Peace Center in Milwaukee. New proposal could end strike by over 700 construction workers
Negotiations scheduled for Friday, June 14, could end a two-week-long strike by 700 to 800 operating engineers in southeast Wisconsin that has impacted multiple local construction projects.<\p> Members of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 139 — including tradespeople who operate cranes, forklifts and concrete pumps — have been on strike since June 1. <\p>

Seven months after Frank Krejci announced his retirement as Strattec Security Corp.’s CEO, the Glendale-based automotive supplier hired a successor from outside the organization: Jennifer Slater, who previously was a top executive at automotive battery maker Clarios International.<\p> Krejci’s retirement was effective at the end of 2023 and Rolando Guilott, who was senior vice president of operations and chief operating officer, has served as interim president and CEO. Guilott was considered a candidate to replace Krejci.<\p>

A floating sauna could add fun on Lake Michigan near Discovery World
A floating sauna will grace the Lake Michigan shoreline outside Discovery World this winter.<\p> A business called Kiln, created by Wauwatosa native Zoe Lake, received approval Thursday from the Port Milwaukee Harbor Commission board of harbor commissioners for a one-year lease with the Milwaukee lakefront museum to operate a floating sauna from the south pier. The business will operate on-site through the winter at the site.<\p>
