Kalmbach to wind down operations by end of July
Kalmbach Media Co., the independent Waukesha publisher of magazines, websites and e-commerce sites for hobby enthusiasts, is planning to wind down operations by the end of July after selling off its business assets in separate transactions.<\p> The media company has already sold off its hobby titles, including Model Railroader, Trains, Classic Trains and Astronomy, to Firecrown Media of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Financial terms were not disclosed.<\p>
Northwestern Mutual shifts senior leadership roles
Northwestern Mutual is shaking up its senior leadership team with four people who will immediately report to the incoming CEO.<\p> The Milwaukee-based financial services company announced four moves on Thursday that were approved by its board of trustees, according to a press release. All changes will go into effect on July 1.<\p>
Michael Lovell was a passionate collaborator for both Marquette, UWM
Marquette University president Michael Lovell knew he likely had less time than he once expected following his cancer diagnosis in 2021.<\p> "When you know you only have a finite period of time, you want to spend your time making an impact," Lovell said during a 2023 Milwaukee Business Journal event called Inspired Conversations. "I find myself very focused, very driven to get things done, and I've lost a lot of tolerance for drama and things that, quite frankly, don't move the needle."<\p>

Medical College of Wisconsin executive Greg Wesley was named the next president and CEO of the influential Greater Milwaukee Foundation succeeding Ellen Gilligan, who is retiring.<\p> Wesley, 54 and a resident of Milwaukee, starts his new role on Aug. 1. <\p>

Madison has been categorized as one of the 10 happiest cities in the U.S., according to a new global ranking from the Institute for Quality of Life.<\p> The London research firm compiled data across thousands of categories to rank cities around the world for its “Happy City Index.”<\p>

Silgan Containers set to buy Crossroads Corporate Park building
Silgan Containers, which has multiple locations in southeast Wisconsin, has agreed to buy a high-profile Waukesha-area office and warehouse building currently owned by Kalmbach Media Co.<\p> The facility at 21027 Crossroads Circle adjacent to Interstate 94 is listed at $9 million by Founders 3, a Milwaukee commercial real estate brokerage. Founders 3 principal Bob Flood, who has the listing, declined to comment.<\p>
Public tribute planned for José Olivieri, who impacted many
As tributes poured in for prominent Milwaukee attorney and civic leader José Olivieri, updated information was released on funeral arrangements.<\p> Olivieri died Sunday at the age of 66. His friends told the Milwaukee Business Journal he had been battling cancer. <\p>
PrideFest reports attendance and sales growth
PrideFest Milwaukee experienced another record year as the festival came to a close this weekend.<\p> The annual event put on by Milwaukee Pride Inc, at Henry Maier Festival Park saw increases across most of its business categories from revenue to sponsors and partners but fell short of its attendance goal of 46,000 to 48,000. However, it still managed to beat its 2023 attendance numbers on its way to climbing back to pre-pandemic numbers.<\p>
Deborah Keller named chair of Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation
Deborah Keller, an experienced life sciences executive, has been appointed chair of the board of trustees for the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), the patent and licensing arm of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.<\p> Keller succeeds Dr. Jim Berbee, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, who was appointed board chair in 2018, WARF said in a press release.<\p>
NAR settlement threw a wrench into VA loans but a fix is coming
The class-action lawsuits that rocked the residential real estate industry over the past year have resulted in nearly $1 billion in settlements so far — and also put in place changes that could have hurt veterans’ ability to shop for homes.<\p> The National Association of Realtors and big brokers such as RE/MAX Holdings Inc., Anywhere Real Estate Inc. and Keller Williams Realty Inc. agreed to prohibit mandatory so-called “cooperation agreements,” in which sellers pay both the selling agent and the buyers agent commission for a sale, in exchange for being allowed to list a home on a multiple listing service.<\p>
Marquette provost named acting president after Lovell's passing
In the wake of the recent passing of Marquette University president Michael Lovell, the university has moved quickly in naming his replacement in the interim while they look for a full-time successor.<\p> The Marquette University Board of Trustees elected provost Kimo Ah Yun to serve as the university’s 25th president in an acting capacity.<\p>
Local subcontractors named for RNC work
Republican National Convention organizers disclosed the identities of three Wisconsin subcontractors and a supplier for the project that will transform Fiserv Forum, UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena and the Baird Center into venues for the mid-July event.<\p> The RNC’s general services contractor, Freeman Exposition LLC, will work with numerous Wisconsin-based subcontractors to assist with the buildout of the three buildings, the Republican National Convention Committee on Arrangements said Tuesday.<\p>
WeWork emerges from bankruptcy, appoints new CEO
After filing for bankruptcy protection in November, New York-based WeWork Inc. said Tuesday it has emerged from Chapter 11 and completed its operational and financial restructuring.<\p> The coworking giant's new era will include a new board of directors and a new chief executive. John Santora will become WeWork's new CEO, effective Wednesday. Santora joins WeWork from commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield PLC (NYSE: CWK), where he most recently served as the firm’s Tri-State chairman.<\p>
