Greenfield woman, 24, faces two felony charges in July 11 crash that killed Milwaukee man

A Greenfield woman is facing two felony charges in connection with a crash July 11 near Timmerman Airport in Milwaukee that killed a 57-year-old Milwaukee man.

Alma Espino, 24, is facing one count of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and one count of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration, according to a criminal complaint filed July 15 in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.

If convicted, Espino faces up to 50 years in prison, a suspension of her driver's license for up to 10 years and a fine of up to $200,000.

Witnesses say Espino was driving erratically before crashing her gray Toyota near the intersection of North Swan Road and West Hampton Avenue in Milwaukee

    According to the criminal complaint:

At 11:09 p.m. July 11, Milwaukee police responded to the intersection of North Swan Road and West Hampton Avenue after multiple 911 calls and reports of a vehicle accident leaving a person trapped underneath one of the vehicles.

When officers arrived, Milwaukee Fire personnel told them that a 57-year-old man, later identified by the Milwaukee Medical Examiner's Office as Dimitri Boone, was found trapped underneath a 2021 Toyota Camry. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy performed later ruled his death was caused by multiple blunt-force injuries.

Witnesses told police they saw the gray Toyota driving erratically at a high rate of speed heading south on Swan Road toward the intersection. A witness who said she worked with Boone said Boone was standing at a bus stop when she saw Espino drive her vehicle on the sidewalk toward him.

Boone attempted to move out of the way, but the vehicle struck a fence before striking him. Espino's car then flipped over twice and hit several other vehicles.

Another witness said she saw Espino's vehicle hit two other vehicles that were in front of her car before seeing Espino exit her vehicle to check on her and the other motorists. She said Espino seemed unaware of the fact her car just struck a man and concluded that Espino was intoxicated.

Officers smelled intoxicants and saw multiple open cans of Crown Royal Peach Tea Whisky on the floorboard of the Toyota

Espino told police she was the driver and only occupant of the vehicle and was driving home after dropping off a friend.

She told police she was using the GPS on her phone and did not remember what direction she was traveling because she wasn't familiar with the area. She did not remember striking a man or any vehicles but said she might have hit a pole.

Police smelled the odor of intoxicants coming from Espino, then noticed multiple open cans of Crown Royal Peach Tea Whisky in Espino's vehicle.

Officers also saw marks in the pavement and grass and damage to the fence alongside Timmerman Airport.

Police took Espino to the District 4 police station, where she participated in field sobriety tests and did not pass any of them. She was then taken into custody.

Electronic data from Espino's vehicle documented the vehicle traveling at 67 mph before the crash. The speed limit near the intersection is 35 mph.

A blood sample taken from Espino revealed that her blood alcohol concentration was 0.163%, more than twice the legal limit.

Espino is due back in court on July 26.
