    Legendary actress Gena Rowlands was one of the most famous people to come from Wisconsin

    Four-time Emmy and two-time Golden Globe winner, Gena Rowlands has died at age 94. In a career spanning more than 60 years, the Wisconsin native was known for her collaborations with her actor and director husband in 10 films, including "A Woman Under the Influence" and "Gloria."

    Rowlands grew up in Wisconsin and later attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

    Here's a look at her ties to the Badger State, and the career that paved her legacy as one of Hollywood's legendary actors.

    Gena Rowlands was born and raised in Cambria, Wisconsin

    Rowlands was born in 1930 and raised in Cambria, Wisconsin, as the daughter of a housewife and actress mother and politician father.

    Growing up her family moved due to her father's political career, however Rowlands returned to Wisconsin for college, attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison . At UW-Madison, she was selected as the queen of the 1948 Pre-Military Ball. She also lived in Milwaukee for a time.

    She left UW-Madison in 1950 just before graduating to move to New York City and study drama at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Shortly after, she went on to star on Broadway in "The Seven Year Itch," and made guest appearances on TV shows. Her film debut occurred in 1958 in "The High Cost of Loving."

    Her career in theater, TV and film stretched over 60 years. During her career, she appeared in more than 40 movies and even more television shows.

    Rowlands is also known for her performances in Woody Allen's "Another Woman" and in her son Nick Cassavetes's 2004 film, "The Notebook."

    In 2024, Rowlands' son said the actress had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease

    In June, Nick shared with Entertainment Weekly that his mom was suffering from dementia , much like her character in “ The Notebook .” Rowlands played an older version of Rachel McAdams ’ character, Allie, in the beloved romance movie, which co-starred Ryan Gosling .

    "I got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer's and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she's had Alzheimer's," Cassavetes told Entertainment Weekly. "She's in full dementia."

    She is survived by her actor-director children, Nick, Alexandra and Zoe Cassavetes. For decades, Rowlands was married to the late director and independent film pioneer Nick Cassavetes.
