A 14-year-old was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in Milwaukee, authorities say.

The teenager received the fatal injuries at about 3:15 p.m. on the 1400 block of North 39th Street, the Milwaukee Police Department said in a media release. The victim was taken to a hospital, before dying.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting and say they do not have an identified suspect. They are asking anyone with information to contact authorities at 414-935-7360. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 414-224-Tips or P3 Tips.

As of Wednesday, 85 people have died in homicides in Milwaukee, according to police.

Data from the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission through June 3 shows there have been 31 youth victims of gun violence, both fatal and nonfatal, so far this year and 13 youth suspects.

Other fatal shootings of minors have occurred this summer. On July 30, 16-year-old Benjamin Mazaba was shot and killed on the 4200 block of South 52nd Street.

On June 19, a 17-year-old Milwaukee boy was shot and killed after a festival at Washington Park on Juneteenth. Organizers faced criticism for the handling of the event, which they ended early, but defended their actions and city officials largely supported the event's handling.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.

There have to be stiffer penalties for crimes like this. They basically get a hand slap and continue on with the violence
