Almost seven hours away from their home field in Oconomowoc, three members of the Lake Country DockHounds jumped into action when they encountered a seriously injured bicyclist, according to the team's director of marketing and communications, Bryan Giese.

On Aug. 7, an elderly bicyclist sustained a severe head injury after a collision with a pedestrian in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Giese said.

The DockHounds, a member of the American Association of Professional Baseball, were in town for a series with the Sioux Falls Canaries and had a game that evening.

Players Marek Chlup and Demetrius Sims, and broadcaster Dominic Stearn were on their way to grab a quick lunch in the Sioux Falls area when they encountered the aftermath of the collision, Giese said.

With no prior first-aid experience, the men acted on instinct to assist the unconscious bicyclist.

Sims said the trio sprinted over to the fallen bicyclist once they saw the scene before them. Once they got to the scene, each man took an assignment to assist with the bicyclist's injury, according to Sims.

"At first, I was afraid," Sims said. "It was pretty traumatic, I'll be honest. There was a lot of blood."

Chlup ran a quarter of a mile to retrieve more help and bandages from a nearby building. Sims stayed with the injured man while Stearn helped guide paramedics to the location of the accident.

"If you see a person on the ground with their head bleeding, you're going to want to help," Chlup said. "Our first reaction was to run over there, and once I realized what was needed, I kept running for help."

The Journal Sentinel was unable to get an update on the man's condition.

DockHounds owner Tom Kelenic said this is the kind of action the organization wants to see.

"We always strive to bring in good people, and those three certainly proved that," Kelenic said.

DockHounds manager Ken Huckaby said he was proud to see three young men who are part of the organization step up to help someone in need.

"Honestly, when bringing players in, I'd rather have a high-character, medium-talent guy than a high-talent, low-character guy, because those high-character individuals build culture," Huckaby said. "And culture is how you win games."

In an Aug. 14 post on X , formerly Twitter, Stearn praised the teammates he helped the bicyclist with.

"Demetrius and Marek are fantastic baseball players, but the two are even better gentlemen," Stearn wrote.
