    UW assistant coach takes first-round lead at Wisconsin State Open

    University of Wisconsin men’s golf assistant coach Ross Thomson set the pace of the 104 th Wisconsin State Open on Monday at Minocqua Country Club in Minocqua, making 10 birdies against two bogeys for an 8-under par 64 to take the lead after the first round.

    Thomson finished third in Wisconsin State Amateur on July 18.

    A native of South Africa, Thomson has been on the Badgers staff since 2022. He is also a professional caddie and has worked on the PGA, LPGA and Korn Ferry tours.

    Thomson took a one-shot lead over fellow amateurs Max Lyons and Cody Guetzke, as each shot 7-under 65s. Lyons is an Arizona native who plays for Marquette University and Guetzke is from Hartland and plays out of the IMG Academy in Florida.

    Zach Burry of Appleton is alone in fourth place at 6-under 66.

    Defending champion Cameron Huss was one of five players to shoot a 5-under 67. The University of Wisconsin alumnus turned professional for the event.

    Professionals Charlie Delsman (Lakeland, Florida), Zach Place (Roselle, Illinois), Matthew Meneghetti (Schererville, Indiana) and Daniel Mazziotta (Wisconsin Rapids) all joined Huss at 5-under.
