From new bookshops to familiar food favorites, the North Shore will see new businesses

From new bookstores to familiar fast food restaurants, there is a variety of new businesses opening in Milwaukee's northern suburbs.

Here's what to know about a few of the planned openings coming soon to the North Shore:

Children's book store and literary-themed event space to open in Shorewood

In Shorewood, a local event planner is embarking on a new endeavor to transform a former pharmacy building on Capitol and Downer into Wonderland Bookshop .

The storefront will open during late October in the former Hayek's Pharmacy building at 4001 N Downer Avenue, owner Courtney Hyzer said.

The family-owned bookshop will sell board books and picture books for children, along with series for middle readers, all-ages reads marketed to young adults, and both fiction and nonfiction for adults ― a roster that promises to captivate the imaginations of young readers and their families, according to the shop's website.

Hyzer will also operate a small event space within the building for small literary-themed tea parties, showers and birthday parties. Book lovers can also purchase from the store's online book and audiobook shop.

The shop is named after Shorewood's early 1900s Wonderland Amusement Park , which once drew many people to the village for thrilling rides, games and paddle boating until it closed in 1916.

"Today, we aim to capture that same playful energy here at Wonderland Bookshop as a nod to this cherished chapter in Shorewood's colorful history," Hyzer wrote on the store's website. "Our shop is a place where our vibrant community can gather, where folks from all over are welcome, and every day offers a touch of whimsy."

The store will be closed on Mondays; open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Cedarburg apothecary reopens under new ownership with more locally sourced goods

On Aug. 17, the Cedar Creek Apothecary reopened under new ownership, offering more locally sourced herbal apothecary items, high-end home and gift shop and natural bath and body products, per the store’s website .

The Apothecary first opened its doors in March 2022 under Siara Dohmen in place of longtime business The Cedar Creek Trading Post at N70W6340 Bridge Road in the Cedar Creek Settlement building.

New owners Jessica Schaetzel and Karen Goeben bought the store from Dohmen in April after they had worked there for several months and Dohmen decided to move to Florida.

Goeben has run her own soap-making operation for the past several years, and Schaetzel is a former pharmacist.

Under the new ownership, the shop is honing in on providing more organic and locally sourced products, as well as higher end items that other stores in the area don't carry, Goeben said. In October, the store will launch its own soap line with Goeben's experience.

"We are excited for our customers to come and explore our extensive range of natural products," the owners wrote in an Aug. 7 release announcing the opening.

The Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce wrote in an Aug. 16 Facebook post that the store is "a treasure trove of premier health & home goods items.”

“Be sure to stop in next time you’re looking for a great gift and something special for yourself.”

    Hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Coming to Glendale in 2025: Dunkin'

Three new restaurants will fill a proposed new building in Glendale by the summer of 2025, including a Dunkin'.

On Aug. 13, Glendale’s Planning and Architectural Review Commission approved the site and design plan for the construction of a 5,355-square-foot commercial building that will include a Dunkin’ with a drive-thru, Taco Pros and Crisp & Green, according to the meeting agenda packet.

The building will be located at 6280 N. Port Washington Road on a vacant 0.69-acre site.

The agenda materials submitted to the commission focus on the Dunkin’, but Taco Pros and Crisp & Green are shown in project renderings by Logic Design and Architecture, Inc.

Taco Pros is a restaurant chain from Illinois, and Crisp & Green is a build-your-own salad business from Minnesota.

According to the packet, Dunkin’ expects to have 16 employees present at peak times and an average of 12 otherwise. A total of 23 parking spaces were included in the development plan.

Hours of operation are proposed from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Bonus: When will the Starbucks in Brown Deer open?

A new Starbucks was set to open in September in Brown Deer at 5960 W. Brown Deer Road, the site of the former Blood Center building. It is currently unknown when construction will continue and the storefront will open.

Earlier this year, Brown Deer's Village Board approved architectural plans for a multi-tenant retail development that will include a Starbucks with a drive-thru, outdoor seating and two other tenants.

The developer tore down the building around two months ago but then everything stopped, Brown Deer Community Development Director Nate Piotrowski said.

He said the delay is caused by the developer seeking a new general contractor, which is out of the village's control.
