Travelers planning to fly next spring and summer are going to need a Real ID in order to board their next flight in the U.S. starting on May 7, 2025.

By the deadline, people 18 and older will be required to have a Real ID-compliant driver's license or other TSA-approved identification to fly domestically. With less than eight months to the deadline, here's what to know about how to get a Real ID in Wisconsin.

When's the deadline to get Real ID in Wisconsin?

Travelers planning on flying with the U.S., or those visiting a military base or other federal buildings will be required to show a Real ID, or another form of identification, such as a passport, starting May 7, 2025.

    What is Real ID?

The Real ID act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the federal government create standards for identification, such as driver's licenses, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

"The act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards," according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The purposes include accessing certain federal facilities, boarding planes and entering nuclear power plants.

Your driver's license will still be valid without a Real ID even after the 2025 deadline. However, you will not be able to fly domestically or enter a federal building unless you have another form of approved identification, such as a U.S. passport.
