This story has been updated with new information.

Verizon says some phone service has been restored in a widespread outage for the company in many states including Wisconsin.

The outage has affected more than 100,000 customers incuding some in southeast Wisconsin.

"Verizon engineers are making progress on our network issue and service has started to be restored...We continue to work around the clock to fully resolve this," the company said this afternoon.

"Our engineers are engaged, and we are working quickly to solve the issue," spokesperson Ilya Hemlin told USA TODAY earlier on Monday.

The extent of the outage in Milwaukee and elsewhere in Wisconsin is still uncertain. Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix, Omaha, and Washington D.C. were some of the cities with the most reports about service issues, according to the website Downdetector.

The Federal Communications Commission said on X Monday afternoon it was working to determine the cause and extent of the disruptions.

T-Mobile and AT&T officials said their respective networks are working, CNET reported , and issues their users may be experiencing could be a result of trying to connect with a Verizon user without working service.

USA TODAY contributed to this report.
