Seven people were rescued from a house fire in Milwaukee's Borchert Field neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

According to a post on X from Milwaukee Fire Department Chief Aaron Lipski, the fire occurred at 3203 N. 11th St. around 4 a.m. on Tuesday. MFD firefighters rescued two adults and five children from the home's second floor. Lipski praised the department's rescue efforts.

Lipski said working smoke alarms alerted the occupants of the fire, allowing them to assemble and isolate themselves from the smoke before firefighters could rescue them. According to WISN 12 News , everyone inside of the home was removed safely and no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Under city ordinance , property owners in Milwaukee must install smoke alarms powered by 10-year or greater, nonremovable batteries. Residents can call the Smoke Detector Hotline at 414-286-8980 to see if they might be eligible for a free smoke alarm to comply with the requirements.

    Fire safety tips

The Milwaukee Fire Department offered these fire safety tips to the Journal Sentinel:

    • Have a working smoke detector on all floors of your home.
    • Test the smoke detector, and replace the batteries when needed.
    • Have a fire escape plan for your home.
    • Have a meeting place outside the home where everyone will gather.
    • Use only one heat-producing appliance in each wall outlet.
    • Check the attic and basement for fire hazards.
