NEW BERLIN - A 69-year-old bicyclist died from his injuries after colliding with a vehicle on Calhoun Road just south of Greenfield Avenue, police said.

New Berlin police had not yet released the name of the victim or the circumstances of the accident, which occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. Thursday and forced the closure of Calhoun between Greenfield and Addison avenues for a time during the initial investigation.

The man was initially treated at the scene and then taken to Froedtert Hospital, where he died that evening, according to an updated news release early Friday from the New Berlin Police Department.

The driver of the vehicle was a 48-year-old West Allis man. According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed that drugs and alcohol were not a factor, but exactly what caused the collision was still being investigated. No charges have been filed as of Friday morning.

Because of the fatality, the Wisconsin State Patrol will try to reconstruct the accident as part of the investigation that will be led by New Berlin police.

That segment of Calhoun Road is just a short distance north of the New Berlin Recreation Trail and is often used by bicyclists as a connection from Greenfield Avenue to the bike trail. It was not immediately known if the bicyclist was bound for the trail when the accident occurred.
