Wisconsin Dem Mocks Trump’s ’34 Felony Counts’ Following ‘Horrible’ Milwaukee Comment: ‘Crime Rate Will Go Up When He Joins Us’

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) mocked former President Donald Trump’s “34 felony counts” in the wake of his reported comment on Thursday that her city of Milwaukee is “horrible,” joking that “our crime rate is going to go up when he joins us in July.”

According to reports by Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News, Trump made the remark during a closed-door meeting with Republican congressional lawmakers. Milwaukee is set to be the location for the 2024 Republican National Convention.

Throughout the afternoon, several Republicans defended the former president and argued that he was commenting on the city’s crime rates and election results. Trump himself did not deny Sherman’s report but attempted to contextualize his comments, portraying Milwaukee as plagued by crime and electoral corruption.

Appearing on MSNBC’s The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell on Thursday night, Moore told the host that she rejected Trump’s take: “A few weeks ago I had a meeting with our police chief and you know crime has gone down all over America, and we are really proud of the fact that crimes like murder and rape have gone down in double digits and one of the biggest problems we have in Milwaukee right now, it is reckless driving.”

Taking a shot at Trump’s record after his conviction of falsifying business records in his recent hush trial, she continued: “I don’t know many people in Milwaukee who have 34 felony counts against them.”

Moore then quipped, laughing: “So the crime rate sure is going to go up when he joins us in Milwaukee.”

Wisconsin is shaping up to be a key swing state for the third presidential election. Trump won the state in 2016 but lost it in 2020.
