Architectural Digest has picked Milwaukee, not known historically for a grand downtown, as having one the most beautiful skylines in the world.

The article, which lists 17 skylines around the world, ranked Milwaukee as number 15.

In his book, "The Making of Milwaukee," historian John Gurda wrote that "compared with communities of roughly the same size and age, Milwaukee had always had a minor-league skyline - a condition that reflected the regional magnetism of Chicago and the importance of Neighborhood ’downtowns’ like Third Street and Mitchell Street."

Well, welcome to the big leagues Milwaukee.

Other U.S. cities on the list? New York City, Chicago and Seattle. That's it. Some of the international cities named included Hong Kong, Dubai, Tokyo, Shanghai and Toronto.

"If it's not Chicago, the Midwest is often overlooked. But as Milwaukee so effortlessly demonstrates, this is a mistake," the article reads.

"While on the smaller-side compared to some on this list, its proximity to Lake Michigan and buildings by heavy-hitters like Santiago Calatrava make it one of the prettiest in the United States."

Unfortunately, the magazine uses a photo from 2014 so it doesn't include the Northwestern Mutual Tower and other newer buildings.
