LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Michigan State Police will deploy 35 uniformed personnel to assist with the security at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

The troopers will be deployed for 7 days, beginning July 13. The troopers will be led by Capt. Gregory Morenko, commander of the Michigan State Police Third District.

The troopers will be on hand to assist with security and crowd management outside the convention center, MSP officials announced in a news release.

The convention begins July 15 and runs through July 18 .

The city of Milwaukee requested assistance through a security compact between multiple states.

“We stand ready to assist our colleagues in Milwaukee with this high-profile event,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP, in a news release. “As state troopers, our members are trained in crowd management and scene security to ensure a safe environment for everyone. We have planned our mobilization to ensure we leave adequate staffing here in our state.”

Troopers have been deployed under the security compact to assist in responses to Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana in 2005, to help in severe flooding in Minnesota in 2009 and in 2011 to New York City to assist after Hurricane Irene hit the city as well as to respond to the 2012 Hurricane Sandy impact in New Jersey. The agency also deployed personnel to the Republican National Convention in 2016.
