The Republican National Convention is due to kick off on Monday, July 15, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Fiserv Forum. Wisconsin is a critical swing state where President Joe Biden and Trump have both campaigned earlier this year.

Trump's campaign has also reassured his supporters that he is "fine" after what law enforcement officials are treating as an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In a post on social media, Trump revealed he was "shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear." The former president was swiftly escorted off stage by Secret Service agents, his ear bleeding heavily.

A prosecutor has confirmed that the suspected gunman and at least one attendee have died, while the Secret Service reported two spectators in critical condition.

President Joe Biden and other political leaders across the spectrum have condemned the attack. Speaking from Delaware, Biden declared: "There's no place in America for this type of violence," and continued: "It's sick. It's one of the reasons we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this."

Shock was expressed on Saturday night by both Republican and Democratic leaders, as well as international allies and adversaries. Prominent figures, including ex-Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, commended the swift response of the Secret Service and expressed relief that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee only suffered minor injuries.

In a statement, Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: "As one whose family has been the victim of political violence, I know firsthand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. I thank God that former President Trump is safe," and continued: "As we learn more details about this horrifying incident, let us pray that all those in attendance at the former President's rally today are unharmed."
