Virginia Gov. Youngkin set to give speech at Republican National Convention on Monday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin will speak Monday evening at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, two people familiar with the plans have told 8News.

Gov. Youngkin (R) is speaking at the RNC in a primetime slot at 8:45 p.m. (ET), — 7:45 p.m. (CT) — 8News was told by Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Rich Anderson.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch first reported that Youngkin is set to speak Monday. Axios is reporting that Republican U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee also has a primetime speech at the RNC on Monday.

Youngkin’s speech comes after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on Saturday, a shooting that killed one man, Corey Comperatore , and injured two others. According to reports , those other men are in the hospital in stable condition.

Per the Washington Examiner , Trump has decided to rewrite his RNC speech after the shooting, which is being investigated as an assassination attempt, after his initial speech was expected to focus on targeting President Joe Biden’s policies.

Trump picked Republican U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his vice-presidential running mate on Monday. Speculation swirled about Youngkin being on the VP shortlist and when asked about being mentioned, Youngkin told reporters “I love my job.”

“Congratulations to @JDVance1 on your nomination to be the next Vice President of the United States! His passion for America’s prosperity, service as a U.S. Marine, and commitment to our commonsense conservative values are what we need for a stronger America,” Youngkin wrote on X shortly after Trump’s announcement.

Youngkin will have other Virginia Republicans with him as he leads the commonwealth’s delegation at the GOP convention, including Attorney General Jason Miyares and U.S. Senate candidate Hung Cao.

“The AG is in Wisconsin as part of Virginia’s delegation July 15-18,” a spokesperson for Miyares’ office told 8News.

Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears is not planning to attend the event, her office told 8News. Her office did not answer questions on whether the lieutenant governor was invited or had prior plans this week.

In 2022 , Earle-Sears said in a Fox News interview that she couldn’t support Trump if he ran for president again.
