MILWAUKEE — Echoing words mouthed by former President Donald Trump after being hit in the ear by a bullet Saturday, Florida delegates at the Republican National Convention erupted into cheers of “Fight! Fight! Fight!” when Rep. Kat Cammack mentioned the assassination attempt at a Monday morning breakfast.
“Believe me, that was God’s hand,” Cammack told the delegates and other Florida attendees. “A small breeze, a slight turn of the head, and we could be having a different conversation today.”
Saturday’s shooting has shaken up the political landscape ahead of the presidential election and is hanging over attendees of this week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Many top Republicans are aiming for a tone of unity at the event, with Trump telling the Washington Examiner that he rewrote his convention speech to try to “bring the country together.”
For many at the convention, the shooting, in which one attendee was killed and others injured, was a call to reinvigorate support around the former president.
Cammack recalled the moment when Trump stood up after the shooting with his fist in the air.
“He pushed back against the Secret Service and said, ‘Fight!’” Cammack said.
Cammack expressed anger at the prosecutions of Trump and the assassination attempt, placing blame on rhetoric from Democrats.
“When they call you a threat to democracy and compare you to Hitler, what did you think was going to happen?” she said. “We appreciate their calls for unity … but how about an apology while they’re at it?”
Cammack touted the need for a “supermajority” in the House.
“We have people who may have an R by their name, but they don’t vote like it,” she said.
She promised if that happens, there will be “no more earmarks” and “no more insider trading for Congress.”
