MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Even after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee, the Republican National Convention is getting underway in Milwaukee.

Tennessee delegates such as Terry Roland are in attendance.

“It’s a lot of people coming together,” Roland said. “If you’ve ever been to a convention like this, it’s like a huge family reunion. Everybody (is) glad to see one another and here for the same reason.”

The former Shelby County Commissioner spoke with WREG by phone and described the security as tight.

“Let me tell you something, it’s better than Fort Knox around here,” Roland said. “But it’s going remarkably. It was smooth.”

Some delegates and volunteers say the convention will be different and themes of unifying the country will be heard.

“The country needs to hear at the end of the day this is about electing our president,” Roland said. “The world ain’t going to come to an end if President Trump gets elected. He’s not Hitler. Both sides need to just calm down and take a big deep breath.”

Roland said this is the third convention in a row that he’s been a Donald Trump delegate.

Though all eyes will be on what happens in Milwaukee this week, Roland said he looks forward to coming back home and making things better.

“Shelby County is already great,” Roland said. “But, I’m going to say this, we are going to come back and make it greater.”
