Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are providing security at this week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just days after a failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

More than 130 law enforcement agencies — including CMPD, Concord police, Greensboro police and Cary police — are sending their officers to help, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

A group of bike officers with CMPD will be at the convention at Milwaukee’s request, CMPD said in a statement. Spokesperson Mike Allinger declined to say how many will be there.

Concord police said they sent 19 officers.

“CMPD leaders are also sharing expertise having provided security and logistics for the Republican National Convention in Charlotte in 2020,” Allinger said in an email. “The CMPD requested and received assistance from other departments in 2012 when the City of Charlotte hosted the Democratic National Convention.”’

The department has helped cities during “major events in the past including national political conventions, international summits and presidential inaugurations,” he said.

All costs for CMPD to be in Milwaukee are being covered by the Republican National Committee, Allinger said. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police agreed to be there before Saturday’s shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, he said.
