LEXINGTON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — The country is still grappling with the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a political rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Crooks as the suspected shooter.

The shooting, however, is not slowing things down in Milwaukee, as the Republic National Convention is underway.

Now, some Kentucky lawmakers describe the political discourse in our country as a “crisis.”

“It’s just gotten a little bit out of hand, and I think it can serve as an incentive toward that small sliver of America who would commit a heinous act like was made on Saturday,” said Sen. Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown.

Sen. Thayer served as a guest host of Monday’s edition of ‘Kruser and Krew’ on WVLK, focusing on Saturday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Instead of receiving calls, listeners could send him a text during the show.

“I see one of the texts that I received that called me a MAGA-cult idiot. Well done trying to turn down the temperature, whoever sent that,” he said.

“Turning down the temperature” is something Sen. Thayer said he plans to do and urges Kentuckians to do as well.

“I think we have to remember that there is more that unites us than divides us and that we are all Americans, and while we may differ on the way to get there, I think we all want America to be in the same place,” he said.

With the Republic National Convention taking place this week, Kentucky District 6 Rep. Andy Barr is on the ground in Milwaukee. He said the tone is centered around unity and support for former President Donald Trump.

“This man, who has shown incredible resilience and toughness, is going to unite the country and this week is the kickoff of that,” said Rep. Barr. “I think this convention is going to showcase not only that he plans in a second Trump term to unite the country but also make America great again.”

With Trump announced as the official Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, Rep. Barr said there’s nothing that will stop him.

“He’s going to give us a vision for uniting the country, getting us past all of this hatred and evil, and making the country what it can be, what it should be, and what he is uniquely capable of achieving, and that is American greatness,” Rep. Barr said.
