Here are the most Wisconsin moments from Day 1 of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee

Wisconsin took center stage on Monday as the RNC kicked off in Milwaukee . The first day was packed with political moments as former President Donald Trump announced his pick for vice president and was officially nominated.

But that wasn't all that happened. It's Wisconsin, after all. We couldn't get through the day without some cheese curds and beer. Here's a look at the most Wisconsin moments from day one of the Republican National Convention.

Cheese curd vendor brought over 360 pounds of cheese

If Wisconsin were a country, it would be the fourth-largest producer of cheese in the world. And at least some of those cheeses ended up at the RNC.

Wisconsin Fried Cheese Curds, owned and operated by David and Sanita Hofer, brought an estimated 360 pounds of cheese for the curds to Convention Fest, plus 60 pounds of sliced cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches. Those cheeses come from Ellsworth and Plymouth, Wisconsin.

"I'm just hoping that we can represent the great state of Wisconsin with high-quality food," Hofer said.

There were plenty more Wisconsin vendors outside, including a beef stick stand. Drink Wisconsinbly also had tents and displayed not-so-political signs, such as "I support fish frys," "Pro-beers & bratwursts" and "Vote yes: Brandy old fashioneds."

Popular Wisconsin beer sparks political discussion

Of course, Brew City has some opinions on popular Wisconsin beers , which sparked political discussion on the first day of the convention.

Politico correspondent Adam Wren reported that Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told a passerby that Spotted Cow is pretty good, “but the owner is ultraliberal. Leinenkugel’s is the conservative one.”

Wisconsinites took to social media to share their opinions on the state's top beer producers and the senator's criticism.

“My primary takeaway from the Milwaukee RNC: Spotted Cow is an excellent beer, shocked by how good it is,” journalist Robert Evan said in an X post.

Milwaukee's first day included warnings of heat, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms

It's Wisconsin. Is the weather going to work out in our favor? Probably not.

Temperatures in the high 80s led to a dozen heat-related calls in the perimeter of the convention. Milwaukee's temperatures peaked in the high 80s on Monday afternoon. With humidity, it felt more like 94-96 degrees, said National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Quigley.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning to parts of southern, central Wisconsin, including Janesville, Albany, and Footville before the threat continued southward into Illinois.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning in eastern Kenosha County until 12:15 a.m.

But in true Wisconsin fashion, the weather will be completely different in just a couple days. Temperatures should subside by tomorrow after a cold front moves in overnight. Wednesday is expected to be sunny with highs in the upper 70s and nighttime lows as cool as the mid-to upper 50s.
