Michael Carpenter, an alumnus of Arrowhead High School and more recently a pitcher at Madison College, heard his name early on Day 3 of the Major League Baseball draft.

Carpenter, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound left-hander, was selected in the 11th round by the Minnesota Twins, the 338th choice. He's among a handful of Wisconsin-connected players to hear their name called in the three-day draft.

Carpenter was named the NJCAA Division II pitcher of the year last season after posting a 1.03 ERA and 0.80 WHIP, a season that included a 45-inning scoreless streak. He logged a program-record 111 strikeouts in 78⅔ innings.

He's committed to play at East Carolina next year. Players in rounds 11-20 all have a $150,000 slot value, and any signing bonus that exceeds the mark must borrow funds from the bonus pool established in the first 10 rounds.

Whitefish Bay's Brady Marget selected in 16th round

Brady Marget, who became the second alumnus of Whitefish Bay High School selected in the draft behind first-rounder JD Dix, was chosen 486th overall by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Marget batted .331 as a junior at Tulane this year, with a .427 on-base percentage, and slugged 10 homers with 59 RBIs in 62 games. The 6-5 infielder was teammates with Dix for one season in 2021, when Bay finished 17-1 in the North Shore Conference. That team also featured future Division I baseball players Jack and Brady Counsell, the sons of then-Brewers manager Craig Counsell.

UW-Milwaukee's Owen Rice gets the call by Cardinals

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee had an alumnus selected for the MLB Futures Game (A.J. Blubaugh) on Saturday, and now they have a 2024 draft pick, as well.

Owen Rice, a left-handed throwing junior from East Troy, was taken in the 20th round by the St. Louis Cardinals at pick No. 591 overall. The 6-6, 230-pounder had a 6.27 ERA this year in 33 innings but was betrayed primarily by walks, with 33 walks in that window. He also had 51 strikeouts.
