Monday got off to a big start with Republican delegates officially voting for former President Donald Trump to be the 2024 presidential candidate as well as the announcement that 39-year-old Ohio Senator JD Vance will be on the ticket as his running mate. A number of speakers took the stage declaring that America needs four more years of Trump, including Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn.
In her speech Monday, Backburn said a Trump reelection would return the U.S. to an "era of prosperity." The four-day event in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, continues with speakers discussing what the Republicans hope they can accomplish in the next four years if Trump wins. And two of the speakers happen to be from Tennessee, Gov. Bill Lee and Savannah Chrisley .
The theme for Tuesday's speakers will be "Make America Safe Once Again."
The fatal shooting comes after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on Saturday that has led to tighter security at the RNC with thousands of police from outside of Milwaukee coming to help with non public facing positions, like traffic control. Milwaukee officers were supposed to have primary contact with members of the community. Any assignments given to outside officers were supposed to include at least one Milwaukee police officer, according to the mutual aid agreement used by participating police agencies.
