Gary Trent Jr. signs one-year deal with Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks have signed free agent guard Gary Trent Jr. to a one-year deal worth the minimum, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was first to report Tuesday.

Trent was one of the top available free agents remaining on the market, others including Tyus Jones , Markelle Fultz and Luke Kennard .

This comes a day after it was reported that the Bucks were “among several contenders” in pursuing Trent, who averaged 13.7 points on 42.6 percent shooting and 39.3 percent from beyond the arc in 71 games with the Toronto Raptors last season.

Trent reportedly wanted a raise from his $18.6 million salary he had last year, seeking $25 million, according to TSN Raptors beat writer Josh Lewenberg. The Raptors were reportedly willing to retain Trent for $15 million, but Trent’s camp did not oblige.

Now, he will make the minimum, worth $2.6 million–or roughly 10 percent of the $25 million he wanted and 14 percent of what he was offered from Toronto–for players with six years of experience. It was incredibly strange that a market didn’t develop for him, arguably the best 3-and-D wings available on the market.

Bucks general manager Jon Horst deserves plenty of credit here, too. He snagged Trent, Taurean Prince and Delon Wright all on minimum contracts. That’s a huge win in it of itself–a vast improvement for a Bucks team that was No. 19 in defense a season ago. All three players are considerable upgrades over Malik Beasley , Jae Crowder and Patrick Beverley , who’s taking his talents overseas.
