Jon Stewart ‘s return to late night television this week will come sooner than expected.
Due to the recent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump , Comedy Central made the decision to cancel The Daily Show ‘s planned Monday (July 15) coverage from Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention is taking place — leading Stewart to return to the show tonight rather than Thursday (July 18), as previously scheduled.
“ The Daily Show will not broadcast Monday (tomorrow) but we’ll be back up Tuesday through Thursday from our NYC studio,” the series announced on Sunday via X .
Their statement continued, “Our apologies for the inconvenience, but due to logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee, we need to reschedule our events on the ground in Wisconsin and will look to make those up in the coming weeks.”
The Daily Show was set for on-the-ground coverage at the convention, per The Hollywood Reporter . The show originally planned to film its daily segments in Milwaukee with Jon Stewart and the news team as hosts.
Stewart’s guest tonight will be former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly , who was fired from the network in 2017 after years hosting his program The O’Reilly Factor .
Stewart is back at The Daily Show after he retired from hosting the program in 2015 after 16 years of service. His successor was Trevor Noah , who hosted the show until 2022. Stewart returned to the show this year to host a number of live shows following major news events and political debates.
It is unclear if The Daily Show will follow its regular comedic format or if it will follow in the footsteps of other late night comedians, multiple of whom — including Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert — took their dialogue space on Monday night to condemn the violent acts against Trump and other members of government.
The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday at 11/10c on Comedy Central.
