Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, the House majority leader, spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Tuesday, a day that leading Republicans and other featured attendees were focused on the themes of safety and immigration. Scalise touched on energy and tax policy before he brought up the attempted assassination against former President Donald Trump, and his own experience being shot by an assailant in 2017 at a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game.

“Many of you know I was the survivor of a politically motivated shooting in 2017. Not many know that while I was fighting for my life, Donald Trump was one of the first to come console my family at the hospital. That’s the kind of leader he is. Courageous under fire. Compassionate towards others,” Scalise said.

During the convention, delegates will adopt a party platform and Trump will formally accept the Republican nomination for president. On Monday, Trump named Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate.
