ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, New York Republican Representative, Mike Lawler, said his party is rallying behind Former President Donald Trump.

“I think what you’re seeing is a party that is unified, that is focused on the November elections and how we move forward addressing the challenges facing the American people,” said Lawler.

Grant Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University, was asked if he thinks Republicans are more united in their support for Trump than Democrats are for President Joe Biden.

“I think they are both equally united around preferring their guy to the other guy,” explained Reeher. “Where I see it being more of a problem on the Democratic side, are levels of enthusiasm and confidence.”

That, however, doesn’t seem to be the case for Republicans after the recent assassination attempt on the former president.

“I think they will be more enthusiastic and probably spend more hours trying to get out the vote and working on his behalf,” said Reeher.

He said the shooting may sway those who are undecided to vote for Trump.

“It might generate more likeability and also a little more, perhaps, respect or confidence in him.”

On the Democratic side, some lawmakers in the president’s own party have called for Biden to step aside following a poor debate performance a couple weeks ago. But Congressman Paul Tonko is not one of them.

“I’ve been working with the president throughout his tenure,” said Tonko. “You know, he is our leader of the ticket, of the party. Until that changes, we are lockstep there to make certain that we take the case to the American public because of the importance of this year’s election.”

Since the assassination attempt, elected officials on both sides of the aisle have condemned political violence and have called for rhetoric to be toned down.
